2026-05-23New function memory_full_upPaul Eggert
* src/alloc.c (memory_full_up): New function. Replace all callers of memory_full (SIZE_MAX) with callers to this function. This simplifies callers and should make future changes easier. It also saves a whopping 296 bytes in executable size with gcc 16.1.1 20260515 (Red Hat 16.1.1-2) x86-64.

2025-12-07Work around GCC bug 123042Paul Eggert
* src/ccl.c: The bug occurs in GCC versions after GCC 13.
2025-04-19Avoid name clashes with static GnuTLSPaul Eggert
Work around a bug in GnuTLS 3.7.11 and earlier: when built statically, its mistakenly exports symbols hash_lookup and hash_string, which collide with Emacs symbols of the same name, preventing temacs from linking statically. Problem reported by Greg A. Woods (Bug#77476). Because GnuTLS never uses hash_lookup or hash_string this issue ordinarily doesn’t seem to prevent temacs from linking to GnuTLS on GNU/Linux, as it’s linked dynamically and the dynamic linker never needs to resolve references to either symbol. However, I suppose a clash or bug could occur even with dynamic linking if Emacs later loads a module that uses either symbol. Although GnuTLS should be fixed, Emacs should link statically to current and older GnuTLS versions in the meantime, and it should avoid potential problems with dynamic linking. Renaming the two clashing names is an easy way to do this. For consistency with the new name for hash_lookup, also rename hash_lookup_with_hash and hash_lookup_get_hash. * src/fns.c (hash_find_with_hash): Rename from hash_lookup_with_hash. (hash_find): Rename from hash_lookup. (hash_find_get_hash): Rename from hash_lookup_get_hash. (hash_char_array): Rename from hash_string. All uses changed.
2025-02-05(font-ccl-encoder-alist): Delete variable, unusedStefan Monnier
* src/ccl.c (syms_of_ccl): Remove `font-ccl-encoder-alist`. * lisp/language/ethiopic.el (ccl-encode-ethio-font): Delete CCL program. (font-ccl-encoder-alist): Don't modify it.

2024-02-18Ignore fewer GCC -fanalyzer diagnostics in ccl.cPaul Eggert
* src/ccl.c: Do not ignore -Wanalyzer-use-of-uninitialized-value, as that bug has been fixed in GCC. Ignore -Wanalyzer-out-of-bounds only if GCC 13, as the bug will reportedly be fixed when GCC 14 comes out.
2024-01-20Be more systematic about parens in C source codePaul Eggert
Be more systematic about putting space before paren in calls, and in avoiding unnecessary parentheses in macros. This was partly inspired by my wading through gcc -E output while debugging something else, and seeing too many parens. This patch does not change the generated .o files on my platform.
2024-01-13Inlined and specialised hash table look-upMattias Engdegård
This improves performance in several ways. Separate functions are used depending on whether the caller has a hash value computed or not. * src/fns.c (hash_lookup_with_hash, hash_lookup_get_hash): New. (hash_lookup): Remove hash return argument. All callers adapted. hash_lookup_with_hash hash_hash_t arg

2023-05-17Prefer C23 ckd_* to Gnulib *_WRAPV macrosPaul Eggert
C23 has added ckd_add etc. macros with functionality equivalent to the older Gnulib INT_ADD_WRAPV macros, so switch to the more-standard names. * admin/merge-gnulib (GNULIB_MODULES): Add stdckdint. This merely makes the dependency explicit, as we were already using this Gnulib module indirectly. * lib-src/etags.c, src/lisp.h: Include stdckdint.h. * lib-src/etags.c (xnmalloc, xnrealloc): * src/alloc.c (xnmalloc, xnrealloc, xpalloc, Fmake_string) (mark_memory): * src/bignum.c (emacs_mpz_pow_ui): * src/buffer.c (record_overlay_string, overlay_strings): * src/bytecode.c (exec_byte_code): * src/casefiddle.c (do_casify_multibyte_string): * src/ccl.c (ccl_driver, Fccl_execute_on_string): * src/character.c (char_width, c_string_width) (lisp_string_width, count_size_as_multibyte) (string_escape_byte8): * src/cmds.c (internal_self_insert): * src/coding.c (coding_alloc_by_realloc, produce_chars): * src/data.c (arith_driver): * src/dispnew.c (realloc_glyph_pool, init_display_interactive): * src/doprnt.c (parse_format_integer): * src/editfns.c (Freplace_buffer_contents, str2num) (styled_format): * src/emacs-module.c (module_global_reference_p) (module_make_global_ref, module_funcall): * src/eval.c (max_ensure_room): * src/fileio.c (blocks_to_bytes): * src/fns.c (Ffillarray): * src/font.c (font_intern_prop): * src/frame.c (check_frame_pixels): * src/gnutls.c (gnutls_hex_string, gnutls_symmetric_aead): * src/gtkutil.c (get_utf8_string): * src/haikuterm.c (haiku_term_init): * src/image.c (xbm_scan, image_to_emacs_colors) (image_detect_edges, png_load_body): * src/keyboard.c (Frecursion_depth): * src/keymap.c (Flookup_key, Fkey_description): * src/lisp.h (modiff_incr, SAFE_ALLOCA_LISP_EXTRA): * src/lread.c (read_bool_vector): * src/pgtkterm.c (pgtk_term_init): * src/regex-emacs.c (regex_compile): * src/term.c (encode_terminal_code): * src/termcap.c (tputs): * src/textconv.c (textconv_query): * src/timefns.c (timespec_ticks, lisp_time_hz_ticks) (Fdecode_time, check_tm_member): * src/tparam.c (tparam1): * src/w32term.c (w32_initialize_display_info): * src/xdisp.c (fill_column_indicator_column, decode_mode_spec): * src/xselect.c (selection_data_size, x_property_data_to_lisp): * src/xsmfns.c (smc_save_yourself_CB): * src/xterm.c (xm_setup_dnd_targets, x_sync_get_monotonic_time) (x_sync_current_monotonic_time, x_sync_note_frame_times) (x_display_set_last_user_time, x_term_init): Prefer the C23 stdckdint macros to their Gnulib intprops.h counterparts, since C23 is standard.

2020-08-17Fix glitch uncovered by gcc -fsanitize=undefinedPaul Eggert
* src/ccl.c (ccl_driver): Defend against signed integer overflow (Bug#42660). Perhaps some of this is unnecessary, but it is safe and ccl.c is low-priority these days.
2020-08-15Prefer Fvector to make_uninit_vectorPaul Eggert
Fvector is less error-prone than make_uninit_vector, as it avoids the possibility of a GC crash due to an uninitialized vector. So prefer Fvector to make_uninit_vector when this is easy (and when there's no significant performance difference). Inspired by a suggestion by Pip Cet in: https://lists.gnu.org/r/emacs-devel/2020-08/msg00313.html * src/ccl.c (Fregister_ccl_program): * src/ccl.c (Fregister_ccl_program): * src/charset.c (Fdefine_charset_internal): * src/font.c (Fquery_font, Ffont_info, syms_of_font): * src/fontset.c (font_def_new, Fset_fontset_font): * src/ftfont.c (ftfont_shape_by_flt): * src/hbfont.c (hbfont_shape): * src/macfont.m (macfont_shape): * src/search.c (Fnewline_cache_check): * src/xfaces.c (Fx_family_fonts): * src/xfns.c (Fx_window_property_attributes): Prefer Fvector to make_uninit_vector when either is easy. * src/fontset.c (font_def_new): Now a function with one less arg instead of a do-while macro, and renamed from FONT_DEF_NEW. All uses changed.
2020-04-25Inline a couple of functions that were macrosPaul Eggert
This reclaims a bit of performance when compiling with gcc -Og. These functions were macros until I changed them in 2020-04-17T14:57:25Z!eggert@cs.ucla.edu. * src/casefiddle.c (make_char_unibyte): * src/ccl.c (GET_TRANSLATION_TABLE): Now inline.
2020-04-17Prefer more inline functions in character.hPaul Eggert
* src/buffer.h (fetch_char_advance, fetch_char_advance_no_check) (buf_next_char_len, next_char_len, buf_prev_char_len) (prev_char_len, inc_both, dec_both): New inline functions, replacing the old character.h macros FETCH_CHAR_ADVANCE, FETCH_CHAR_ADVANCE_NO_CHECK, BUF_INC_POS, INC_POS, BUF_DEC_POS, DEC_POS, INC_BOTH, DEC_BOTH respectively. All callers changed. These new functions all assume buffer primitives and so need to be here rather than in character.h. * src/casefiddle.c (make_char_unibyte): New static function, replacing the old MAKE_CHAR_UNIBYTE macro. All callers changed. (do_casify_unibyte_string): Use SINGLE_BYTE_CHAR_P instead of open-coding it. * src/ccl.c (GET_TRANSLATION_TABLE): New static function, replacing the old macro of the same name. * src/character.c (string_char): Omit 2nd arg. 3rd arg can no longer be NULL. All callers changed. * src/character.h (SINGLE_BYTE_CHAR_P): Move up. (MAKE_CHAR_UNIBYTE, MAKE_CHAR_MULTIBYTE, PREV_CHAR_BOUNDARY) (STRING_CHAR_AND_LENGTH, STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE) (FETCH_STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE) (FETCH_STRING_CHAR_AS_MULTIBYTE_ADVANCE) (FETCH_STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE_NO_CHECK, FETCH_CHAR_ADVANCE) (FETCH_CHAR_ADVANCE_NO_CHECK, INC_POS, DEC_POS, INC_BOTH) (DEC_BOTH, BUF_INC_POS, BUF_DEC_POS): Remove. (make_char_multibyte): New static function, replacing the old macro MAKE_CHAR_MULTIBYTE. All callers changed. (CHAR_STRING_ADVANCE): Remove; all callers changed to use CHAR_STRING. (NEXT_CHAR_BOUNDARY): Remove; it was unused. (raw_prev_char_len): New inline function, replacing the old PREV_CHAR_BOUNDARY macro. All callers changed. (string_char_and_length): New inline function, replacing the old STRING_CHAR_AND_LENGTH macro. All callers changed. (STRING_CHAR): Rewrite in terms of string_char_and_length. (string_char_advance): New inline function, replacing the old STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE macro. All callers changed. (fetch_string_char_advance): New inline function, replacing the old FETCH_STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE macro. All callers changed. (fetch_string_char_as_multibyte_advance): New inline function, replacing the old FETCH_STRING_CHAR_AS_MULTIBYTE_ADVANCE macro. All callers changed. (fetch_string_char_advance_no_check): New inline function, replacing the old FETCH_STRING_CHAR_ADVANCE_NO_CHECK macro. All callers changed. * src/regex-emacs.c (HEAD_ADDR_VSTRING): Remove; no longer used. * src/syntax.c (scan_lists): Use dec_bytepos instead of open-coding it. * src/xdisp.c (string_char_and_length): Rename from string_char_and_length to avoid name conflict with new function in character.h. All callers changed.

2019-08-15Fix some fixnum overflow problems in ccl.cPaul Eggert
* src/ccl.c (ccl_driver, Fccl_execute, Fccl_execute_on_string): Don’t assume CCL registers fit into fixnums.
2019-06-27Improve XFIXNUM cleanup a bitPaul Eggert
Based on Pip Cet’s review (Bug#36370#13). * src/ccl.c (Fccl_execute_on_string): Use clearer indexing. * src/dosfns.c (Fint86, Fdos_memput): Avoid runtime checks for negative fixnums when debugging. This restores the earlier machine code. * src/lisp.h (XFIXNUM, XUFIXNUM): Use eassert, not eassume. (XFIXNAT): At the start, merely eassert FIXNUMP rather than eassuming FIXNATP. At the end, eassume that the result is nonnegative. This restores help to the compiler that the previous patch mistakenly removed.
2019-06-27Clean up use of XFIXNUM etc.Paul Eggert
A few bits of the code were relying on the fact that XFIXNUM, XFIXNAT, and XUFIXNUM do something even with arguments that are not fixnums/fixnats. Separate these rare uses out into XFIXNUM_RAW and XUFIXNUM_RAW. Problem and original patch reported by Pip Cet (Bug#36370). * src/ccl.c (Fccl_execute_on_string): * src/fileio.c (Finsert_file_contents, a_write) (Fdo_auto_save): * src/process.c (conv_lisp_to_sockaddr): * src/textprop.c (Fnext_single_char_property_change) (Fprevious_single_char_property_change) (Fnext_property_change, Fnext_single_property_change) (Fprevious_property_change) (Fprevious_single_property_change): Don’t assume fixnums are nonnegative. * src/ccl.c (Fccl_execute_on_string): Fix range-checking bug if AREF (status, i) is out of int range. * src/data.c (arith_driver): Use XFIXNUM_RAW as we want efficient garbage if the value is not a fixnum. * src/dosfns.c (Fint86, Fdos_memput): Check that args are nonnegative. * src/image.c (lookup_image): Check that args are in range. * src/lisp.h (lisp_h_XHASH): Use XUFIXNUM_RAW, since this is for hashing. (lisp_h_XFIXNAT, XFIXNAT) [USE_LSB_TAG]: Remove macros. (lisp_h_XFIXNUM_RAW, XFIXNUM_RAW) [USE_LSB_TAG]: New macros, with the semantics of the old macros without _RAW. (XFIXNUM_RAW, XUFIXNUM_RAW): New inline functions, with the semantics of the old functions without _RAW. (FIXNUMP): Move definition up to avoid forward use. (XFIXNUM, XFIXNAT, XUFIXNUM): Use eassume to add a runtime check (when debugging) that the argument has the proper form. (XFIXNUM, XFIXNAT): Now inline functions only, since they refer to their arguments more than once now that they use eassume. * src/textprop.c (Fprevious_single_char_property_change): Avoid fixnum overflow with invalid input. (set_text_properties): Fix unlikely failure to validate arguments, by using EQ instead of XFIXNAT. * src/w32term.c (w32_draw_glyph_string): * src/xterm.c (x_draw_glyph_string): Treat negative minimums as 0 rather than as garbage patterns.

2017-09-13Prefer HTTPS to FTP and HTTP in documentationPaul Eggert
Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs. This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party, planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down). HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone for now.
2017-05-16Merge with gnulib, pacifying GCC 7Paul Eggert
This incorporates: 2017-05-16 manywarnings: update for GCC 7 2017-05-15 sys_select: Avoid "was expanded before it was required" * configure.ac (nw): Suppress GCC 7’s new -Wduplicated-branches and -Wformat-overflow=2 options, due to too many false alarms. * doc/misc/texinfo.tex, lib/strftime.c, m4/manywarnings.m4: Copy from gnulib. * m4/gnulib-comp.m4: Regenerate. * src/coding.c (decode_coding_iso_2022): Fix bug uncovered by -Wimplicit-fallthrough. * src/conf_post.h (FALLTHROUGH): New macro. Use it to mark all switch cases that fall through. * src/editfns.c (styled_format): Use !, not ~, on bool. * src/gtkutil.c (xg_check_special_colors): When using sprintf, don’t trust Gtk to output colors in [0, 1] range. (xg_update_scrollbar_pos): Avoid use of possibly-uninitialized bool; this bug was actually caught by Clang. * src/search.c (boyer_moore): Tell GCC that CHAR_BASE, if nonzero, must be a non-ASCII character. * src/xterm.c (x_draw_glyphless_glyph_string_foreground): Tell GCC that glyph->u.glyphless.ch must be a character.
2017-01-25Replace QUIT with maybe_quitPaul Eggert
There’s no longer need to have QUIT stand for a slug of C statements. Use the more-obvious function-call syntax instead. Also, use true and false when setting immediate_quit. These changes should not affect the generated machine code. * src/lisp.h (QUIT): Remove. All uses replaced by maybe_quit.

2016-03-10Rework C source files to avoid ^(Paul Eggert
Work around Bug#22884 by rewording comments and strings to avoid ‘(’ at the start of a line unless it starts a function. This change is a short-term hack; in the longer run we plan to fix cc-mode’s performance for C files that have ‘(’ at the start of a line in a comment or string.

2015-01-05Compute C decls for DEFSYMs automaticallyPaul Eggert
Fixes Bug#15880. This patch also makes Q constants (e.g., Qnil) constant addresses from the C point of view. * make-docfile.c: Revamp to generate table of symbols, too. Include <stdbool.h>. (xstrdup): New function. (main): Don't process the same file twice. (SYMBOL): New constant in enum global_type. (struct symbol): Turn 'value' member into a union, either v.value for int or v.svalue for string. All uses changed. (add_global): New arg svalue, which overrides value, so that globals can have a string value. (close_emacs_global): New arg num_symbols; all uses changed. Output lispsym decl. (write_globals): Output symbol globals too. Output more ATTRIBUTE_CONST, now that Qnil etc. are C constants. Output defsym_name table. (scan_c_file): Move most of guts into ... (scan_c_stream): ... new function. Scan for DEFSYMs and record symbols found. Don't read past EOF if file doesn't end in newline. * alloc.c, bidi.c, buffer.c, bytecode.c, callint.c, casefiddle: * casetab.c, category.c, ccl.c, charset.c, chartab.c, cmds.c, coding.c: * composite.c, data.c, dbusbind.c, decompress.c, dired.c, dispnew.c: * doc.c, editfns.c, emacs.c, eval.c, fileio.c, fns.c, font.c, fontset.c: * frame.c, fringe.c, ftfont.c, ftxfont.c, gfilenotify.c, gnutls.c: * image.c, inotify.c, insdel.c, keyboard.c, keymap.c, lread.c: * macfont.m, macros.c, minibuf.c, nsfns.m, nsfont.m, nsimage.m: * nsmenu.m, nsselect.m, nsterm.m, print.c, process.c, profiler.c: * search.c, sound.c, syntax.c, term.c, terminal.c, textprop.c, undo.c: * window.c, xdisp.c, xfaces.c, xfns.c, xftfont.c, xmenu.c, xml.c: * xselect.c, xsettings.c, xterm.c: Remove Q vars that represent symbols (e.g., Qnil, Qt, Qemacs). These names are now defined automatically by make-docfile. * alloc.c (init_symbol): New function. (Fmake_symbol): Use it. (c_symbol_p): New function. (valid_lisp_object_p, purecopy): Use it. * alloc.c (marked_pinned_symbols): Use make_lisp_symbol instead of make_lisp_ptr. (garbage_collect_1): Mark lispsym symbols. (CHECK_ALLOCATED_AND_LIVE_SYMBOL): New macro. (mark_object): Use it. (sweep_symbols): Sweep lispsym symbols. (symbol_uses_obj): New function. (which_symbols): Use it. Work for lispsym symbols, too. (init_alloc_once): Initialize Vpurify_flag here; no need to wait, since Qt's address is already known now. (syms_of_alloc): Add lispsym count to symbols_consed. * buffer.c (init_buffer_once): Compare to Qnil, not to make_number (0), when testing whether storage is all bits zero. * dispextern (struct image_type): * font.c (font_property_table): * frame.c (struct frame_parm_table, frame_parms): * keyboard.c (scroll_bar_parts, struct event_head): * xdisp.c (struct props): Use XSYMBOL_INIT (Qfoo) and struct Lisp_Symbol * rather than &Qfoo and Lisp_Object *, since Qfoo is no longer an object whose address can be taken. All uses changed. * eval.c (run_hook): New function. Most uses of Frun_hooks changed to use it, so that they no longer need to take the address of a Lisp sym. (syms_of_eval): Don't use DEFSYM on Vrun_hooks, as it's a variable. * frame.c (syms_of_frame): Add defsyms for the frame_parms table. * keyboard.c (syms_of_keyboard): Don't DEFSYM Qmenu_bar here. DEFSYM Qdeactivate_mark before the corresponding var. * keymap.c (syms_of_keymap): Use DEFSYM for Qmenu_bar and Qmode_line instead of interning their symbols; this avoids duplicates. (LISP_INITIALLY, TAG_PTR) (DEFINE_LISP_SYMBOL_BEGIN, DEFINE_LISP_SYMBOL_END, XSYMBOL_INIT): New macros. (LISP_INITIALLY_ZERO): Use it. (enum symbol_interned, enum symbol_redirect, struct Lisp_Symbol) (EXFUN, DEFUN_ARGS_MANY, DEFUN_ARGS_UNEVALLED, DEFUN_ARGS_*): Move decls up, to avoid forward uses. Include globals.h earlier, too. (make_lisp_symbol): New function. (XSETSYMBOL): Use it. (DEFSYM): Now just a placeholder for make-docfile. * lread.c (DEFINE_SYMBOLS): Define, for globals.h. (intern_sym): New function, with body taken from old intern_driver. (intern_driver): Use it. Last arg is now Lisp integer, not ptrdiff_t. All uses changed. (define_symbol): New function. (init_obarray): Define the C symbols taken from lispsym. Use plain DEFSYM for Qt and Qnil. * syntax.c (init_syntax_once): No need to worry about Qchar_table_extra_slots.
