2026-05-02; Improve documentation of Emacs server-client protocolEli Zaretskii
* lib-src/emacsclient.c (main): * lisp/server.el (server-process-filter): Document the protocol requirements regarding the terminating newline. (Bug#80807)
2026-04-18emacs server sending long-line simplificationPaul Eggert
Now that emacsclient can receive long lines without problems, don’t bother splitting long lines when sending to it. * lisp/server.el (server-msg-size): Now obsolete. (server-reply-print): Send qtext without trying to break it into pieces (Bug#80807#49).
2026-04-16Append newline to server -error commandsPaul Eggert
Problem reported by Zhengyi Fu (bug#80844). * lisp/server.el (server--process-filter-1, server-return-error) (server-edit-abort): Append newline to -error commands, too. Otherwise emacsclient has no reliable way to find the end of the error command’s argument, except to wait for EOF which is undesirable since the Emacs server keeps the socket open for a while, waiting for emacsclient to exit.
2026-03-26Add predicate for initial_terminalBasil L. Contovounesios
This introduces the predicate frame-initial-p, which uses struct frame.output_method or struct terminal.type to detect initial_terminal without relying on its name (bug#80629). For some prior discussion, see: https://lists.gnu.org/r/emacs-devel/2019-12/msg00480.html https://lists.gnu.org/r/emacs-devel/2020-01/msg00120.html * doc/lispref/frames.texi (Frames): Document frame-initial-p. (Finding All Frames): Fix grammar. * etc/NEWS (Lisp Changes in Emacs 31.1): Announce frame-initial-p. * lisp/desktop.el (desktop--check-dont-save): * lisp/emacs-lisp/debug.el (debug): * lisp/frameset.el (frameset-restore): * lisp/menu-bar.el (menu-bar-update-buffers): * lisp/xt-mouse.el (turn-on-xterm-mouse-tracking-on-terminal): Use frame-initial-p instead of checking the "initial_terminal" name. * lisp/emacs-lisp/byte-opt.el: Mark frame-initial-p as error-free. * src/pgtkterm.c (pgtk_focus_changed): Use IS_DAEMON in place of Fdaemonp, thus also accepting a named daemon session. * src/terminal.c (decode_tty_terminal): Clarify commentary. (Fframe_initial_p): New function. (syms_of_terminal): Expose it. (init_initial_terminal): Update commentary now that menu-bar-update-buffers uses frame-initial-p (bug#53740). * test/lisp/xt-mouse-tests.el (with-xterm-mouse-mode): Simulate the lack of an initial terminal by overriding frame-initial-p now that turn-on-xterm-mouse-tracking-on-terminal uses it. * test/src/terminal-tests.el: New file.

* lisp/server.el (server-visit-files): Don't consider the file as having disappeared if it never existed when visited previously. Doc fix. (Bug#79609)
2025-08-31Allow entering the debugger on error in emacsclient connectionsSpencer Baugh
* lisp/server.el (server--process-filter-1): Use 'condition-case-unless-debug'. (Bug#65897)
2025-03-29Improve message handling on server stopJens Schmidt
* lisp/server.el (server-stop): Use a clearer signal message if there is an existing, external Emacs server. (server-start): Use a different warning if one attempts to only stop (and not restart) an external server. (server-unload-function): Silently stop the server if unloading its library. (Bug#76870)

2024-05-30server.el: Avoid nested runs of process filters (bug#71223)Stefan Monnier
In case we have a "storm" of emacsclient requests coming at the same time, our process filters ended up running nested within each other, eating up the stack and causing errors. Try and be more careful with our use of `sit-for` in the process filter, and make sure our process filters are run one at a time. * lisp/server.el (server--message-sit-for): New function. (server--process-filter-1): New function, extracted from `server-process-filter`. Use `server--message-sit-for` to display the messages and use `run-with-timer` to delay the `delete-process`. 2023-10-29Add 'server-eval-args-left' to server.elSpencer Baugh
Passing arbitrary arguments to functions through "emacsclient --eval" sometimes requires complicated escaping to avoid them being parsed as Lisp (as seen in emacsclient-mail.desktop before this change). The new variable 'server-eval-args-left' allows access to the arguments before they are parsed as Lisp. By removing arguments from the variable before they're parsed, a snippet of Lisp can consume arguments, as in emacsclient-mail.desktop. org-protocol might be able to use this as well, which might allow it to drop its current advice on server-visit-files. * etc/emacsclient-mail.desktop: Use 'server-eval-args-left'. * lisp/server.el (server-eval-args-left): New variable. 2022-12-07Make 'server-stop-automatically' into a defcustomJim Porter
This changes the meaning of the (formerly internal) variable 'server-stop-automatically': it now always holds the requested configuration, even when Emacs was not started as a daemon (bug#59668). * lisp/server.el (server-stop-automatically): Convert the variable to a defcustom, and make the function simply set the defcustom. 2022-12-06; Remove dead code from 'server-stop-automatically--handle-delete-frame'Jim Porter
* lisp/server.el (server-stop-automatically--handle-delete-frame): Since 'this-command' is never 'save-buffers-kill-terminal' in this function, we can remove the second 'if' block and it's then-form, leaving only the else-form. Additionally, remove the 'delete-frame' call; it's not necessary, since we just killed Emacs on the prior line.
2022-12-04Make killing a non-last client work the same no matter the auto-stop settingJim Porter
Previously, if 'server-stop-automatically' was configured for 'kill-terminal' or 'delete-frame', killing a client via 'save-buffers-kill-terminal' wouldn't prompt about the saving files in the client's buffer list (as it does when not using those settings). This change ensures that those settings only apply when killing the last client, as described in the manual (bug#51993). * lisp/server.el (server-save-buffers-kill-terminal): Handle 'server-stop-automatically' behavior in this function, rather than calling 'server-stop-automatically--handle-delete-frame'.
2022-11-27; Don't emit a "Server stopped" message when restarting the Emacs serverJim Porter
* lisp/server.el (server-stop): Return non-nil when we actually stop the server. Don't message about stopping the server here (but do log it). (server-start): Emit the appropriate message about stopping or restarting the server.

2022-11-24Don't explicitly delete client frames when killing Emacs anywayJim Porter
This eliminates a useless error prompt when killing Emacs from a client frame when there are no other frames (bug#58877). * lisp/server.el (server-running-external): New error. (server--file-name): New function... (server-eval-at): ... use it. (server-start): Factor out server stopping code into... (server-stop): ... here. (server-force-stop): Use 'server-stop', and tell it not to delete frames. * test/lisp/server-tests.el (server-tests/server-force-stop/keeps-frames): New test.
2022-11-19Fix encoding and display of messages sent by server to emacsclientEli Zaretskii
* lisp/server.el (server-start): Use 'locale-coding-system' to encode messages sent back to the client. * lib-src/emacsclient.c (main): Print '-error' messages via 'message', not directly via 'fprintf'. This shows the error on MS-Windows when the client is invoked as 'emacsclientw', since stderr goes to the bit bucket in that case.
